What Calm offers

Calm is a subscription meditation and sleep app with a content library that has expanded steadily since the app's 2012 launch. The core categories:

Sleep stories — what they actually are

The narrators are typically asked to read 5-10% slower than normal, with deliberate pauses.

The mechanism is plausible but not well-studied. Some users find them deeply effective; others find named-narrator readings actively distracting. The match-quality is highly individual.

Calm vs Headspace — the genuine differences

These two apps converge on similar pricing ($70/year), similar feature checklists, and similar accuracy of meditation instruction. The genuine differences:

  • Editorial style. Calm leans warmer, more atmospheric, more produced (named narrators, original music). Headspace leans more structured, more pedagogical, more clinical-feeling (founder Andy Puddicombe's voice as the central instructor).
  • Sleep content depth. Calm's sleep library is meaningfully larger and more polished. If sleep is the primary use case, Calm has the edge.
  • Beginner training structure. Headspace's "Basics" courses are more rigorously sequenced for someone learning meditation from scratch. Calm's structure is looser.
  • Meditation app research base. Headspace has substantially more peer-reviewed RCT evidence for its specific content. Calm has some, less.

For sleep specifically: Calm. For learning to meditate from zero: Headspace. For most people who want both: pick by 7-day free trial preference; the apps are similar enough that subjective fit dominates.

When the $70/year is worth it

  • You have current sleep-onset difficulty and find narrated audio reduces ruminative thinking
  • You want a single app that handles meditation, sleep content, and ambient sound rather than three separate tools
  • You're new enough to meditation that the structured content earns its keep
  • You'd value Calm's named-narrator content style over alternatives (subjective)

When it isn't

  • You already have a meditation practice and just need basic timing/sounds — Insight Timer (free + optional subscription) covers this far cheaper
  • You don't actually use the app after the first few weeks — this is the most common pattern for meditation app subscriptions; cancellation rates spike at the 30-90 day mark
  • You find narrated voices in your ear actively annoying at bedtime (a non-trivial subset of users)
  • You want offline-first content; Calm requires connectivity for most content
