Major breathwork methods, briefly
- Wim Hof Method (WHM): 30-40 deep cyclic breaths followed by extended breath retention, paired with cold exposure and concentration practice. Best-researched of the modern Western breathwork modalities.
- SOMA Breath: rhythmic breathing patterns paced to specific music; integrates pranayama elements with modern facilitation. ~2,000 trainers worldwide.
- Holotropic Breathwork (Grof): extended period of accelerated, deepened breathing combined with evocative music; produces non-ordinary states of consciousness. Requires GTT-certified facilitator for safe practice.
- Conscious Connected Breathwork (CCB): continuous, paused-free breathing through the mouth or nose for extended periods (45-60 min); foundational to many modern breathwork modalities.
- Pause Breathwork: proprietary modality integrating somatic and trauma-informed elements with conscious connected breath.
- Pranayama: traditional yogic breath practices (nadi shodhana, kapalabhati, ujjayi, bhastrika); typically taught within yoga retreats and ashram settings.
Safety considerations
Breathwork that produces non-ordinary states (Holotropic, extended Conscious Connected, intense WHM cycles) is contraindicated for: pregnancy, cardiovascular conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, history of seizures, recent surgery, and acute psychiatric conditions. For those with trauma history, work with a trauma-informed facilitator (Pause, certain Holotropic facilitators) rather than introductory class formats. The most powerful breathwork modalities can surface significant emotional material and should be practiced with appropriate support.
