What float therapy is
Floatation therapy involves lying in a shallow pool of water saturated with Epsom salt (~1,000 lbs per 200 gallons of water), kept at skin temperature. The salt density makes the body float effortlessly; the temperature match removes thermal sensation. With the lights off and lid closed, sensory input drops below the threshold the brain can use for spatial orientation. The result is a state of profound physical relaxation and reduced cortical activity.
Sessions typically run 60-90 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes are usually spent settling; deeper relaxation builds in the second half. Most centers offer an introductory rate (typically $50-$70) for first-time floaters.
Tank formats
- Pod: enclosed lid-down design, smaller footprint, slight claustrophobia trigger for some users
- Cabin: walk-in room-sized format, more spacious, easier first-time experience for those wary of enclosed spaces
- Open pool: larger pool with no enclosing lid; common in True REST corporate format; appeals to claustrophobia-sensitive users
